DVD day! November 17, 2010

What an exciting day! This morning I picked up our new DVD from Keith who filmed it all and has spent hours sat next to me editing it (poor thing). The DVD is wonderful and the footage of the babies signing is magical. I think I was getting on Keith’s nerves as every time a baby signed I kept saying ooh and ahh! Unfortunately I was so caught up with the babies that I didn’t notice that the “hello song” was out of sync. Oops. It will need a little more tweaking but we are nearly there.

I showed some of the Mums in the improvers class today as most of them had their little ones starring in the DVD. Two of the Mums have now had the babies they were pregnant with in the DVD. Little Mei and baby Alex have both arrived safely and seem to be the most laid back babies ever!

Also Debbie who does everything for my website has added the blog to the babysign website, so we are officially live. What a day! Let’s hope I don’t mess it up when anyone wants to comment. Debbie has explained how to do everything but technology is not my strong point. Watch this space I think….

Songs November 3, 2010

Well….I’ve opened a can of worms here. I spoke to some friends today about the nursery rhymes and songs that my babysign mums didn’t know. Can you believe that none of my friends knew “there was a princess long ago” ? I can’t believe it. Ok ok…. so I didn’t know Rabbit Foo Foo until a couple of years ago…..and I still can’t remember the words. Isn’t it strange? I guess we learn initially from our families and then either from baby classes we attend or from cbeebies! Maybe we should have a hit list of the most well known rhymes and songs. Hmmm I will have to think about that.

Classes November 2, 2010

A new term for my babysign classes. Today there were two beginners classes and one improver’s class. I absolutely love the first day of a new class. Everyone is nervous, not quite knowing what’s in store and suddenly they are thrown into this unusual world of sign language. The great thing about learning babysign is that you are able to watch your baby begin to communicate but as an added bonus the “grown up” is learning a new language.  No nappy brains for our babysign Mums!

I was quite surprised today as a couple of the songs we sang were unknown by some of the class. My Mum used to sing them to me when I was a little un’ ….it made me feel very old. Imagine how my poor Mum would feel! The songs were “Nobody loves me, nobody cares, I think I’ll go and eat worms” and “Dingle Dangle Scarecrow”. Never mind, a few more weeks with me and they will be reciting every nursery rhyme known to man.

The babies were adorable. They just love the music and their eyes followed me signing to them for such a long time. I don’t believe these cynics who say babies only have a few seconds attention span, they should see the darling babies in my classes.

The improver’s class was a bit of self indulgence for me. It was mainly the babies (actually toddlers in some cases) who appeared in our babysign DVD.  Three of the Mums have new little babies too. What a lovely lesson it was. The older children were signing beautifully to the songs and signing please and thankyou when they asked for a biscuit. They make me feel so proud. As I said…pure indulgence!
