Enhancing bond

I was asked today whether I thought using babysign increased a bond between a parent and their baby. It made me think back to when my youngest daughter was about a year old. She was in her highchair and the table was laid with lots of different plates of food. She started pointing and getting cross trying to explain what she wanted. The more she yelled the more frustrated I became too. I passed her all sorts of foods only to have them pushed away in disgust. Suddenly she had a “eureka” moment and went very quiet and made the sign for a book. A book was the last thing I was thinking of, carrot sticks, bread, cake but not a book. I passed her the book and calm was restored. We were both happy and smiling again and we shared a real moment of closeness. So….I can say from personal experience that signing really can enhance the bond between you. I think it is because you are able to share in your baby’s needs but also in their desires.
